GM has a plan! Tell Congress the US Auto Industry matters!

How embarrassing! David Vitter fails us again!

I am only 15 years old, but I think this might make sense. If someone is failing, making failing grades, doesn't that mean that the position they are in is maybe too challenging. Poor David, he just can't do it. I know in High School if a class is too hard, then I change classes. Maybe David should consider a new position. David's entire, embarrassing life in the public eye we have watched him be a puppet. A puppet for Washington 'big shots'! Anyone who knows me will tell you that I support Democrats and Republicans. I am proud whenever I see politicians go over to their friends on the other side and do what is best for America and their constituents. It is because of confused politicians like David Vitter that we find ourselves in the kind of troubles that we are in. It's okay David, not everyone is cut out for public service! We need real leadership and someone who stands up for all of us! David is not what he claimed to be. We watched David parade around Louisiana and tell us that he he was the 'family values' candidate. FALSE! He said he would stand up for us. FALSE! David vitter was given an F in 2005 and 2007 by middleclass.org. He did not go to Washington and stand up for all of us. People in Louisiana make 29% less than the average American. Most making just 30,000 a year. David you failed, and we suffered!

Are you serious? David Vitter expects us to re-elect him? haha

Republican Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, will run for re-election in 2010. AP reports that Vitter will hold a fundraiser next week for his campaign. The event will be headlined by popular Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, a potential Republican nominee for President in 2012.

Vitter refused to resign in July of last year when reports linking him to the late DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey, surfaced. His phone number was disclosed by Palfrey. Palfrey committed suicide in May.

Vitter made news today by calling the auto bailout "ass backward". This post from Wonkette's Jim Newell deftly handles the comedy radiating from that choice of words. Vitter and fellow Republican Senators Jim DeMint, Richard Shelby, John Ensign, and Tom Coburn plan to mount an effort to block the legislation.

David Vitter, How can you call yourself an American?

Senator Vitter obviously needs to come home more because in Washington DC he is forgetting who he represents. Vitter fails to see that many Louisiana dealers, like my family, who combined own four dealerships and employ 300 people total, would completely lose everything if this 'bailout' were to fail. Lafayette alone has about 7 domestic car dealerships that would all close their doors if Vitter had his way. I would lose everything, if my Senator had his way in Washington. Do you not care about me, Senator? Who did you go to Washington to represent? Which Japanese company is more important to you, Toyota, Nissan, or Honda, these companies are constantly taking away from the American people. If you had the slightest care for Louisiana and America you would not be in Washington attacking the nation that you have been so fortunate to live in. How dare you! How dare you attack small business owners in Louisiana trying to make a living. My great-grandfather started his car dealerships that sell only domestic; he started his businesses with a loan from the bank and a plan to service his clients with the best service they could find. My family has been in this business for three generations. We are not corporate CEOS flying to Washington asking for your help. We are a small Louisiana family trying to make a living. We are the people you represent. What about the General Motors plant in Shreveport? That plant alone employs 1500 people and had plans to employ 1500 more. 1 in 10 jobs in America are related to the domestic car industry. 65% of car dealerships in Louisiana are domestic and on average employ 60 people each. How could you let Louisiana down? Your plan to filibuster this ‘bailout’ in the Senate shows me, every dealer in Louisiana, and every person in Louisiana affected by the auto industry that you are not qualified to be in Washington. See you in 2010, Senator, me and the 20,000 other people in LOUISIANA whose jobs rely on the DOMESTIC car industry (not including Newspapers, radio, TV, and other industries who rely on the domestic industry.)

Do you want an America without domestic cars?

American Car Industry FACTS!

From plants to parks. From dealerships to driveways. From gas stations to grocery stores. What happens in the automotive industry affects each and every one of us.

At General Motors we’ve been working hard to build sustainable success, not just short-term results so we can help the American automotive market regain its worldwide prominence.

We’ve taken steps to improve our business:
GM has been streamlining its U.S. operations and has dramatically reduced its salaried and hourly workforce
GM has committed to leading in the development of advanced propulsion technology, including breakthrough technologies like the Chevy Volt extended-range electric car
GM and its unions have reached groundbreaking agreements
GM will have reduced cumulative structural costs between 13 and 14 billion by 2010
But these improvements won’t just help General Motors, they’ll help all of us who are touched by the automotive industry in ways we may not even realize.
What happens to the U.S. auto industry matters on Main Street. There are some 14,000 U.S.-brand dealers in cities and towns across the country, employing approximately 740,000 people, with a total payroll of some $35 billion
Motor vehicles and parts are the single largest export from the U.S., topping aerospace, medical equipment and communications
The collapse of the U.S.-based auto industry would account for a direct, indirect and spin-off employment drop of 2.95 million people, and a personal income drop of $150.7 billion*
Tell your U.S. Senators and Representatives that support for the U.S. auto industry is in America's best economic interest and is a sound investment toward a more competitive future. White House, Democrats Near Short-Term Deal For Automake

Jolted by news of the worst job losses in more than 30 years, congressional Democrats were near an agreement with the White House yesterday on a plan to speed at least $15 billion to the faltering Detroit automakers in hopes of averting the collapse of an industry that supports millions of U.S. jobs.

The 7th Congressional Debate

Last night the candidates for the 7th Congressional District faced off in what will be the ONLY telivised debate of this race. Regrettfully Congressman Boustany has refused to participate in any other debates.

We are very proud of State Senator Don Cravins performance as he clearly won the debate last night. Boustany clearly illustrates in this debate that he is out of his depth. What do you think?

Oui, on peut! (Yes, we can)

From our Brother's & Sisters at SEIU

SEIU put this ad together... McCain tried last night to distance himself from Bush with his little barb to Obama about "If you wanted to run against Bush..." The facts are rather clear that there is little difference between McCain and Bush... and what differences that may exist only make McCain look worse in the eyes of working men and women.

LeftBlog: Double Dipping

Double Dipping

The Leftblog

By Stephen Handwerk

Sunday night I tuned into 60 Minutes, as usual and boy was this a learning experience. Most do not understand the "Bail Out" - and I fancy myself someone who stays up on these sorts of things – but even this has me scratching my head. It turns out that is what they wanted.

Many have said that this crisis was caused by people who purchased homes they could not afford – however this expose clearly shows that not only is this false but if it were the only issue the country would be just fine right now (as would most of the financial institutes). It was the Mortgages these banks were selling and developing and then finally released to the Public. You see, Mathematicians and Physicists were working for Wall Street with the purpose to write these “vehicles” for all of these folks to first peddle and then to profit from – this was shocking.

“Credit Default Swaps” have turned out to be the biggest problem in this crisis. This has multiplied the losses of these large banks. See these banks were trying to sell these risky packaged loans – they were having problems. So their solution – “Credit Default Swaps”. Basically this is an insurance contract for the investor – if the “product” fails – they will get all their money back. That is right – NO RISK at all for these folks. The issue – this was NOT insurance and because it wasn’t insurance and wasn’t regulated. You see if it was the person offering the insurance would have been required to keep adequate financial reserves to cover any losses. They were selling crap investments with even crappier insurance.

Take a look at the full story by 60 Minutes (in two parts)

Very clearly they articulate that this would NOT have been a huge issue for the nation if it were only the 5-6% of the homeowners that were “out of their depth” and over their heads. The system could have handled that. It was this exotic financial games that these bankers were playing.

Yesterday on Capitol Hill we had the first of the hearings to find out what has happened. Taking the HOT SEAT yesterday was the head of Lehman Brothers - a man that has become RICH off this sceme perpetuated on the American People and who has been compentated almost a HALF BILLION DOLLARS in just the past 6 years. Lehman used to be a huge and respected institution that held a large majority of even the government’s debt. Yet they fell for these “Ponzi schemes” hook, line and sinker.

Many folks have fallen into the trap of blaming this on the Community Reinvestment Act or Fannie and Freddie. This report completely shoots holes all through that argument. Clearly the default rate, while higher today than 4 years ago, it is clearly within the tolerance levels of the normal system. The issue here is the selling and re-selling then insuring against any risk that has now gutted some of the largest financial institutions in the world’s history.

Make NO mistake here – we are bailing out these huge banks and the people who were involved in these risky investments. And there seems as if there will be no “judgment day” for these folks who perpetuated this crime on our country. Why? Even though the regulators and the SEC knew what was happening – nothing these folks were doing was illegal or in violation of any SEC rules. The FBI is reported to be looking over these cases to find if there was wrongdoing and if so they will hold them to account- A bit too little, much too late.

Now fast forward to MONDAY – 3 days after the Congress passed this “bail out” and we see the markets tanking – yesterday we saw an 800 point loss – only to see the market rally and close down only shy of a 400 point drop. This “back stop” that we – the American People, and our representatives in Washington – we scared into supporting appears to have had little effect. One thing is for sure – our children and grandchildren will be paying for this for years to come.Regulation for regulation sake is bad… regulation to protect the American People and our collective checkbook is good – and ultimately that is what we are talking about here.

Tonight we have the second Presidential Debate between McCain and Obama. It should be an interesting night. Reports are signifying that McCain is desperate and that he is “taking off the gloves” but frankly his campaign has been all over the place and making little or no sense. They remind me of my dog chasing her tail. I hope we have a substantive night tonight, and I hope that you will join us in the Daily Advertiser CHAT ROOM as we watch the Debate LIVE.

More tomorrow!

Now is the Time - Don Cravins, Jr.

Taking Back LA-07 for Working Families
by Stephen Handwerk, The Left Blogger

Now is the time, now is the place. We simply MUST take back this district. Here are just a FEW reasons why:

Charles Boustany, MD fought and voted against funding the LACHIP (SCHIP) Program which funds healthcare for Children then he turned around and campaigned on how much he supports it
We Need Don!

Charles Boustany, MD during the TERRIBLE hurricanes 3 years ago – Katrina and
Rita – went on MSNBC and railed on Governor Blanco stating the reason for all
the problems were the Democrats – yet on KPLC the VERY SAME DAY he stated the state was doing a “great job” and that FEMA and the Administration were to blame
We Need Don!

Charles Boustany, MD fought harder to get his money back after TRYING to become a LORD through the British Empire (Yes, he tried to Buy a British Lordship!) than he did for the people of his district while Recovering from Hurricane Rita!

We Need Don!

State Senator Don Cravins, Jr. is my friend. He is a strong family man – a proud Southern Democrat who will fight for ALL of the hard working families in our District. He knows what a hard day of work is like and he knows how hard it is to raise a family when the government is working so hard against you.

So I am asking, can you spare some money to help Don HELP US? It is simple and easy… just fill in the blanks and we can take back this district!

John McCain - on the Forclosure rates

John McCain and all his Houses

John McCain is soaring to new heights of hypocrisy on his wife's personal jet. He flies around the country bent on duping the public into believing he's "one of them," a regular guy who can empathize with Americans facing an overwhelming economic crush. What's more, he disparages those who oppose his ridiculous policy proposals as "elitist." But who's the real elitist?

The REAL McCain is a multimillionaire who owns ten luxurious homes. The REAL McCain backs President Bush's tax cuts for big corporations. The REAL McCain empathizes only with the interests of our nation's wealthy minority, not its money-strapped majority. But far too many are buying into McCain's deceit because the corporate press won't present the whole picture, so we created this video to educate the public about the REAL McCain.

John Kneely Kennedy: Privitize Social Security

New Ad by Senator Landrieu correctly pointing out that John Kneely Kennedy has been on all sides of about every issue out there. Now in a clear attempt to pander to his new Republican bosses he is willing to gamble away Social Security.

Boustany may have diagnosed Rita Amnesia, but he has done little to treat it

Boustany and Scalise to lead Republican Delegation on Tour of New Orleans

http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/washington/index.ssf?/base//news-2/121895164490710.xml&coll=1

While Democrats meet in Denver next week to nominate Sen. Barack Obama as their presidential candidate, two Louisiana Republican House members will lead a group of their GOP colleagues on a tour of offshore drilling operations. "This will be an excellent opportunity to highlight how safe drilling is done offshore and to see how important it is to lift the existing congressional moratorium on drilling on the rest of the Outer Continental Shelf," Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, said. Scalise and Rep. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette, also plan to take Republicans on a tour of New Orleans to check on recovery progress since Hurricane Katrina struck nearly three years ago. "Congressman Boustany and I want to make sure our colleagues understand how much work still needs to be done to fully recover from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita," Scalise said. The New Orleans visit is slated for Aug. 25-26. House Democrats toured the city and other Gulf Coast communities last month to assess recovery progress. President Bush is due in New Orleans next week, just ahead of the Aug. 29 third anniversary.

This continues to GULL me more than ANYTHING… Boustany YET AGAIN is giving focus to NEW ORLEANS and while this BLURB mentions RITA there is likely to be no trip to the west to see the Devastation in Cameron and Vermilion… Such is the case with Boustany. Boustany may have Diagnosed the Country with Rita Amnesia, but he has done LITTLE to treat it.

John Kennedy: One Confused Politician

Mary Landrieu releases a new ad calling into question State Treasurer John Kneely Kennedy's motives and past. Surely this election is not going to be as close as the made up polls we have seen released this past week from Kneely's camp.

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Be careful what you ask for...

This past week most of the national news was focused on a huge international trip by presumptive Democratic Nominee Senator Barack Obama. It is interesting that this trip didn’t seem to be very high on the list of the candidate were it not for the constant peppering by Republican rival Senator John McCain. McCain should be careful what he wishes for, as Obama made a wildly successful trip to almost a dozen separate countries with relatively few hiccups – and as he returns to the US he is greeted with new polls by the Associated Press showing him 9 point ahead of the Republican perennial candidate.

I suppose this story started even before Obama had cemented the number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination. McCain started attacking Obama on his stances with regards to Iraq and specifically pointing out that he should go to Iraq and see the wonderful things that have been happening on the ground. McCain taunted him for over two weeks on this issue seemingly at every chance he got in front of a microphone. He should have known better, really.

One has to expect if Obama was going to travel overseas that he would make stops in Europe as well as the war torn Middle East. There he would obviously be greeted by thousands (Hundreds of Thousands as it appears…) and that would be a huge net positive. This would clearly depict Obama as a World Leader and clearly the American people – those who have yet to fall for his charms – are starting to agree as we have seen with the poll numbers that have been coming in over the last 24 hours.

You don’t have to take my word for it – Senator Chuck Hagel, strong republican and a bit of a maverick in his own right and it appears he used to be quite close to McCain. However it appears those feelings are drifting a bit. Hagel went on to several National News programs this weekend, having traveled with Obama and the Congressional team on the first leg of the trip through the middle east, to talk about his experiences and give his thoughts. They were quite positive in Obama’s favor.

Now, the GOP and McCain have swooped in to criticize Obama for not making a visit to Landstuhl – This is the FIRST of the swift boat ads in my opinion.

So here is the real story. In planning out this trip and as things were getting closer to the European leg of his trip, the Obama team and the Pentagon staff were talking about any foreseeable issues. It is completely untrue that Obama wanted to bring cameras in as the McCain ad suggests. The real story is that while the first part of the trip was part of a congressional delegation and paid for by the congressional budget – the second part of the trip that took Obama into Germany, France and Great Brittan was being paid for by the campaign. Therefore no matter what choice he made he was caught. Go to visit the troops without staff, only with secret server – we know the photos would get out – heck the troops would want to have their photos taken with the Senator. Then the headlines would read “On Political Trip Obama pauses for Photo Op with Wounded Troops.” And if he didn’t go, well we see what they are doing now. It is quite shameful… and again, don’t take my words for it – take John McCain’s own words…

Senator McCain in 2007: “How can we possibly find honor in using the fate of our servicemen to score political advantage in Washington? There is no pride to be had in such efforts. We are at war, a hard and challenging war, and we do no service for the best of us-those who fight and risk all on our behalf-by playing politics with their service.” [Congressional Record, 5/24/07]

I also have a huge problem with the other allegations that are made in this ad such as “he voted against funding our troops” – This is just borderline crazy. In fact, this is an attack that was used on Hillary Clinton during the primary and it was clearly shown that Obama voted to keep funding our troops while pushing for a reasonable time table.

But lets reverse this a bit – John McCain as refused to support the New GI Bill which would take care of our men and women when they return from duty by paying for them to go to a state college or university. McCain doesn’t support this. In fact Republicans have led the efforts to block substantial pay raises and benefit increases to all of our troops. It is sad really.

Our Men and Women in uniform are catching on – they are not falling for these ads. I have spoken with many service members both on and off active duty and most of them are reporting a large democratic swing in their ranks. Many “lifers” that I have spoken with have seen this change happening over the past 8 years. One Louisiana service member told me that he was at a Town Hall meeting in Opelousas where David Vitter defended his stance against fully funding the VA system, this at a time where more and more women were returning broken and in need of mending. This is when he said – that he could no longer blindly follow in the republican footsteps as his father did.

The sea is turning – frankly I am quite ashamed that McCain is so desperate for headlines that he would use his own money to pay for an ad like this that stinks of swift boating. The scary part is, I think this is only the beginning.

IN other news…
Senator Mary Landrieu continues to pick up steam with now over 70 of our Mayors in Louisiana now endorsing her re-election. It’s a good thing too especially out here in the 7th Congressional District. I spoke with several of our Mayors and City and Parish Council members and many of them have told me that they have had the door slammed in their face over the last year by Congressman Boustany as he is refusing to even listen to their needs if it could come close to including an earmark. I asked them how they are dealing with this huge shift and they said… “well we are over-working Landrieu’s team” – that is right. Boustany is refusing to do his job as a US Congressman by looking for and securing much needed funds to improve infrastructure here in the 7th Congressional District – (a district mind you that is solely affected by what he dubbed “Rita Amnesia”). So Senator Landrieu and her dedicated team come through yet again for many of these municipalities looking high and low to try to find the funds needed to recover & rebuild and to look towards a brighter future.

Not to be left out – our own State Senator Don Cravins passed a HUGE hoop this past week as his campaign was elevated into an “Emerging Race” in their eyes. They clearly see Don as a very capable and more in touch candidate than the good Doctor. Don is successfully working the district meeting with party leaders, business leaders and civic organizers on a daily basis. He is putting together quite an outstanding team here on the ground as well and I am very impressed with all they have done thus far. “I’m with Junior!”

Finally, in a “WHAT THE?” moment… This past week Lord Boustany sent out an e-mail piece (mind you this is clearly a campaign piece yet his congressional staff sent it out via his congressional website!) that claims his support for LaCHIP - ?? REALLY? Then why did he vote against this no less than 4 times? Boustany has clearly been against this program clearly for the last year voting against it each and every time it has come up… yet now he and his congressional staff send out this propaganda piece? This isn’t the first time that the good doctor has employed such tactics. Two years ago in much the same form he then took to our mail boxes (on taxpayer money) to tell us what a great job he was doing. The senate has rules that prevent this – however Boustany with his first official votes in congress being to weaken the Congresses ethics committee it should be no surprise. Again, you don’t have to take my word for it… here are his votes:

On January 23, 2008, he voted to sustain the President’s veto of bipartisan children's health care legislation [H.R. 3963, #22, 1/23/08], on October 25, 2007, he opposed the bipartisan compromise on State Children’s Health Insurance Reauthorization Act [HR 3963, Vote #1009, 10/25/07], On October 18, 2007, he voted to sustain the President’s veto of the bipartisan SCHIP bill [HR 976, Vote #982, 10/18/07], On September 25, 2007, he opposed the State Children’s Health Insurance Reauthorization Act [HR 976, Vote #906, 9/25/07]

More next week, good friends! Note if you would like to get involved in this years historic election cycle drop me an e-mail or visit www.LafayetteDemocrats.org for additional information.

CenLamar: On Life in Louisiana

In case you missed it, Louisiana Treasurer John N. Kennedy is running for Senate again. The last time he ran for Senate in 2004, he finished third.

But in the political career of John N. Kennedy, 2004 was eons ago.

Back in 2004, John N. Kennedy was a proud Democrat who endorsed Bush’s opponent, John Kerry, for the Presidency. Back in 2004, most Louisianans had a certain respect for Mr. Kennedy. Despite his lackluster showing as a candidate for United States Senate, we still reelected him as our State Treasurer.

Skip ahead to 2007.

In a bizarrely opportunistic move, Treasurer Kennedy, who faced yet another reelection campaign, flew up to Washington, D.C., where he was courted by none other than Karl Rove. Rove allegedly convinced Kennedy to become a Republican in order to challenge Mary Landrieu for the Senate in 2008. Oyster at YRHT noted:

Five weeks after being re-elected State Treasurer, and after airing commercials saying he was running again because “the job’s not finished”, John N. Kennedy is already switching to a new job: replacing Mary Landrieu in the U.S. Senate.

Landrieu’s been busy raising money left and right. She’s also been landing endorsements from local Democrats and Republicans.

Meanwhile, Kennedy seems to be struggling. The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is attempting to help him out, but something rings hollow about a group of well-financed national Republican strategists accusing Landrieu of vague ties with shady figures. Just today, Kennedy revealed his stance against state earmarks to non-profits; it will be interesting to see if he follows the party line and opposes federal earmarks of any kind. (We’ll have to wait and see how he balances this issue in a time when Louisiana is most in need).

The clearest sign of Kennedy’s troubles was his recent decision to invite President Bush to help him raise money. Remember, Kennedy, as a Democrat, publicly opposed Bush in 2000 and 2004. But when the going gets tough… you listen to Rove, switch parties, and embrace your former opponents. No doubt, Kennedy is also struggling to raise cash from his former Democratic supporters, and the Bush fundraiser represents a great opportunity to quickly raise a ton of money from a group of wealthy businessmen who would pay (”donate”) thousands of dollars just to be in the presence of the President.

Landrieu’s campaign responds (from The Bayou Buzz and bold mine):

It was announced this week that President George W. Bush will headline a fundraiser for Senator Landrieu’s opponent, Republican John Kennedy. It is expected by many observers that the Bush fundraiser will raise a million dollars for Kennedy’s campaign.

The national Republican leadership in Washington has made it clear for over a year that the Louisiana U.S. Senate seat held by Mary Landrieu is their Number One Target for 2008. They have vowed to spend millions to defeat Senator Landrieu to win this very important election. Bringing in George Bush is part of their strategy.

Remember, too, that candidate Kennedy was recruited to run against Senator Landrieu by Bush’s chief political strategist, Karl Rove. In fact, Kennedy was a Democrat less than seven months ago and had to switch parties before he made this run.

John Kennedy supported John Kerry in 2004 but has now become a Bush Republican and has asked the President to come into the state to raise money for his campaign….

While Washington partisan operatives are plotting an aggressive campaign against her, Senator Landrieu is doing what all good public servants should do: Her job.

Her record of accomplishment proves her effectiveness. In fact, a nonpartisan group, Congress.org, recently rated her one of the most effective members of the U.S. Senate.”

It will be interesting to see what President Bush has to say when he’s in Louisiana raising money for his candidate. Will he discuss why he vetoed the Water Resources Development Act, which included billions of dollars for vital Louisiana projects? Will he defend the incompetent record of FEMA? Will he explain why his administration has allowed endless red tape and bureaucracy to slow down Louisiana’s hurricane recovery?

The Bayou Buzz also calls attention to a John Maginnis column that reveals Governor Jindal and Senator Vitter will be chairmen of this upcoming fundraiser.

What's Next for John Kennedy?

It's funny that since this video was published John Kennedy has switched parties and run for U.S. Senate again!

TheLeftBlog: Boustany hosts swanky party... and you are not invited

The LeftBlog

This past week it was revealed in Roll Call, an inside the beltway magazine that reports on the actions and or inactions of members of congress, that our very own Charles Boustany some two weeks ago held a swanky party for his closest friends – Federal Lobbyists. Yep, he is quoted as saying that he had this meeting in part to find out what their priorities are… It is highly likely that there was a rather LARGE basket at the door for their loose change.

I do not see that the reports have been issued from last week’s filing deadline, but I really can’t wait to see them. Through March 31st of this year Boustany has taken roughly $700,000 of which 40% of that comes directly from PAC’s. (He has paid out over $400k which leaves him only about $300k on hand so one can see why it was so important for him to have this “Party”) That is actually quite high compared to the averages. It is also quite troubling for Boustany that the Average House member has significantly outraised him. Perhaps he may be banking on the fact that retiring congressman from Shreveport Jim McCrery is turning over his very successful “leadership PAC” to Boustany and one would think that Boustany would tap those funds if needed.

Interestingly enough this committee is called “The Committee for the Preservation of Capitalism PAC” (as if Capitalism is going anywhere… quaint though). This committee just got done doling out checks of $2,500 to $5,000 per Republican House members who are in vulnerable or competitive races. (Can’t wait to see if Boustany was one of them.) The Advocate points out that this committee has contributed more than $832,000 to candidates. Sure looks like this is an incumbent protection program here and I am QUITE sure that $832,000 can buy more than a few things in DC… if you know what I mean.

Looking back to the 2006 cycle when challenged by an underfunded Candidate, Boustany took in roughly $1.6 Million of which half of that came directly from Special Interest groups. Only a fraction of the donors were from this district. What will this cycle look like when he has a very well funded candidate with large and growing support?

It’s not all difficult news for Boustany though – the Advocate also reports that Boustany was named the ranking Republican on the subcommittee on (and get a load of this name…) department operations, oversight, nutrition and forestry on the House Agriculture Committee. Perhaps now since Doc Boustany is on the watch he can find out while it is still hard to get good tomatoes on my salad! And why this happened in the first place. In fact reports are showing the Inspectors from the Federal Government are only inspecting raw produce suppliers like once every 5 years… possibly 10. And rarely do they ever visit the growing fields where the products are grown. This poor track record must be addressed or I fear bad tomatoes are just the start of our woes.

However I am not too optimistic about Boustany playing any significant role – remember he is against any sort of regulations on business including environmental (not to mention the minimum wage) as he stated two years ago at a town hall meeting here in Lafayette. There after pressed repeatedly for a full answer by local Attorney Anthony Fazzio, Boustany recounted a litany of things that he was against – regulations and minimum wages were the two that stuck with me. Well without regulations we get Mad Cow… and without enforcement we get it faster. Boustany needs to join the Democrats in cracking down on Manufacturers who have for the most part been given a free pass for the last few years.

How, you may ask, have they been getting a free pass? Let’s take a look at INS records for the past 7 years then compare that to any or all of the years of the Clinton Administration. The raids on businesses became almost completely non-existent for the past 7 years under Bush & Co. This wink and the nod to large corporations to “do what they need to do” to get by – this clearly includes hiring illegal workers. Another very clear symptom of this is to look at all the mining accidents that we have had throughout the past few years. Again, inspections by this administration have fallen to almost zero and therefore corners are being cut.

Secondly, you have the almost complete deregulation of the Media. Now it is not uncommon for you to get your Newspaper, TV News, internet and your radio station talk show all provided by the very same company.

How, you may say, does this tie to Boustany? He clearly would like to see more of this. You see Boustany subscribes to the Free Market Standard… He is a FREE MARKET Purist, if there is such a thing. He feels that government has no right at all to regulate businesses – that instead if a company does something wrong that ultimately it will be forced to correct it by the “free market” – however let’s look at the top two points I just made.

  1. How is it a “free market” when millions of undocumented workers are flooding our job market, lowering the standards and often working below minimum wage and often “off the books”. A free market would have controls for this or SOLID boarders.
  2. How can we expect to have a FREE Market when the media – the Fourth Estate is largely owned lock stock and barrel by the very same corporate interests that are taking advantage of #1.

The thing is regulations are good. Regulations that say your neighbor can not; at 3 AM, have a party with speakers blasting rock music into your house shaking furniture and photographs. Most cities have noise restrictions – and most of us agree with those. We say that sure, you own your own property – but you don’t have the right to infringe onto someone else’s.

Some regulations are good. Corporations should have to follow the same rules, but all too often they do not. Unregulated corporations pollute the land, air and water.

It is time for the pendulum to swing back to the center folks. We have gone much too far to the right when it comes to these sorts of issues and it is showing in our economy. For the first time since the depression the National Average savings rate (this is the amount of money that is saved for every dollar earned by the average American) is -$.01 This means for every dollar the average American makes, they go into debt by a penny. And boo, those pennies – they add up.

And this brings us right back to Charles Boustany. Boustany didn’t meet with the people of his district, he met with his stock holders, the Lobbyist and ask them what his marching orders would be and told them how much money he needs to run for re-election.

Boustany meets with Lobbyists to find out what needs done, Cravins meets with families in his district to ask them what needs done. Which is better? I will take my neighbors over the special interest groups any day of the week.

Tonight Congressional Candidate Don Cravins Jr. will be meeting with 30 Constituents to talk with them about the issues they are facing today – the economy, education, the war and healthcare I am sure are going to be at the top of our lists when we meet with the State Senator Tonight.

What would you like to ask Senator Cravins? I will take the top three questions we get here and ask the senator personally and next week I will have your answers. (No Flames and no Freepers).
